The Crooner

Her eyes search for the DJ in the smoke filled room. She needs to keep her eye on him between songs in case he calls her name. The music in the club vibrates throughout her body. She knows that even without her hearing aids on, she could still dance to the music. She knows that when it is her time to sing, the music will be at the right level for her to follow along, yet her sometimes slightly off-pitch sounds will be covered up when she pulls the mic a little further away from her mouth. She trusts this DJ; he knows her though she doesn't come to the club on a regular basis.

He looks straight at her as the music quiets and calls her name. She trembles slightly as she leaves her seat, her spirit exhilarated in the anticipation of singing. She steps up to the stage, glances at the screen. The DJ smiles at her in approval. The mic is cold in her hands. Her right knee trembles as the butterflies begin to flip around inside her belly. She closes her eyes as the music begins, her breathing calming as she shuts the audience out. She starts singing, softly at first, testing her voice. She finishes the first verse and her eyes flutter open, unsure of what she will find in the crowd.

A couple finds the dance floor, a lighter is held in the air. Her voice becomes stronger as the crazy churning of her belly subsides. Her knee stops shaking. She pelts out the chorus, putting her soul on the line as she sings. Her voice grows stronger as her confidence builds. She sings the riffs of the Vince Gill song and the crowd quiets. Her eyes close again as she falls into the song with every molecule from her body. Her voice lifts up, soaring above the bar, chasing the digital sound that is her accompaniment, as she sings the final notes. The cacophony of applause drowns out the end of the song and the cloud descends as she steps from the stage.

"You should record that." she hears as the cloud she is soaring on flies her to her table once again.

Critique welcome.
